Below are a few reasons why I made the leap of faith to include flexible seating in my classroom and haven't looked back. Choice Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. My goal is to allow them to change their location and positions biweekly. For the time being, I choose their table and placement but give them the choice to change their type of seat. Kayla Delzer, is the author of the popular 2015 EdSurge story, “Why the 21st-Century Classroom May Remind You of Starbucks.” In a 2016 follow-up story on Edutopia, she says giving students choices about their physical classroom space teaches them higher-order thinking skills. “Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them? Physical Health Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. It’s no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. An academic paper by Matthew T. Mahar found that simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, too. Comfort An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student. Comfortable students are engaged students. Community Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space and supplies. Flexible seating encourages students to share both. And, it encourages them to take turns in different locations and with different seating options. This is huge folks! “When preparing kids for the real world, we want students’ learning environment to reflect the environment of the real world,” said Manuel Herrera, a district tech coordinator for the Affton School District in Missouri, as he reflected on the flexible seating movement that began in the workplace. I believe that flexible seating is here to stay. Collaboration Flexible seating allows students to quickly and easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class – without moving mountains of heavy desks to establish eye contact. “The students we share our classrooms with don’t know life without constant connectivity, Wi-Fi, and a global audience. Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day.” Sensory Input Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD. Fun Flexible seating helps make learning fun. The benefits far outweigh any negatives. It takes a little getting used to but the students will love it and learn so much from each other. Part of our responsibility as educators is to teach the importance of healthy decisions in everyday life. Right now is a critical time for our children to learn how to choose healthy foods. I admit that I am passionate about good, wholesome foods. However, I know that life happens and sometimes grab and go is the easiest option. I get it. I am a mom of 2 and teacher to 28 :). Life is hard and messy and sometimes we just need to eat the cupcake, lol!!
I am attaching a link to Healthy Living revolution with a Start Strong Challenge. This is just good info that I wanted to share with all of my peeps. https://healthylivingrevolution.com/start-strong-kids-challenge/ After 11 years of teaching, I have stuck to my belief of teaching health in everyday life. Students enjoy it and learn a lot. It makes me very proud to watch them grow and make choices in eating that will last a lifetime. This does not mean that we will never eat sweets/candy/chips/ :)!!! I would love to hear from some of you on how you make healthy options ( that are quick & easy) available for your kiddos. Post in the comments to share some ideas or even post a picture.
Mood is a huge part of reading. Determining mood is important to truly comprehend a book/movie/scenario/conversation. A reader must pay close attention to the character's tone of voice (even if the voice is silent), word usage, body language etc. in order to determine the right mood. The setting/surroundings help add meaning and details to the mood. The mood is the feeling, and how a reader connects to the character.
Watch the following silent animation and determine the mood of each character. Describe the mood(s) as the animation begins and ends. How does the mood change? Why do you think the mood changes? Is the mood what is telling the story without the use of words? Could you add your own words to go along with this silent animation? Comment with your response. Solve the mysteryThe Case of the Missing Shamrock Featuring Nina Chase & Max Decker
MysteryIt was late afternoon when Nina and Max Passed Miss Flannagan’s classroom at Harborville Middle School. they were about to go home when they saw their teacher scowling at maria inside. Maria was also scowling and she was whispering to Miss Flannagan, while Megan and Patrick stood Listening Nearby. “Let’s stop a minute and see what’s going on here,” Nina said to Max. Miss Flannagan motioned them to come in. “I have a problem” here. Maybe you two can help me with it. You’ve solved Mysteries before, so please think a bit about this one.” “What’s going on?” Max asked. “Give us the details. Why are you whrispering, Maria?” “I have a cold,” Maria Whispered and popped a cough drop into her mouth. “I lost my voice two days ago.” “But what’s the problem, Miss Flannagan?” Nina asked. “Surely you’re not looking for maria’s lost voice.” Patrick and Megan giggled, but they said nothing. Miss Flannagan didn’t smile. Nor did Maria. “My shamrock plant’s missing,” Miss Flannagan said. “It was right here on my desk, a few minutes ago. I brought it to school so my students could see a true shamrock plant, but now it’s gone. I can’t find it anywhere. I left the room for just a few moments to take some books to the media center. I know the plant was there at that time because I watered it. But when I returned to my classroom, These three were here and my shamrock was gone. I think one of them has taken it. Maybe one of them is hiding it as a joke.” Nina thought about the missing plant as she looked at patrick, Megan, and Maria. they all looked nervous and ill at ease. “What do you three have to say about this?” Nina asked. “Patrick, you told me yesterday that you needed a gift for your grandmother who is visiting you. was taking Miss Flannagan’s plant the solution to your problem?” “No,” Patrick said. “Megan and MAria were already in Miss flannagan’s room when I arrived to get my English Assignment. I didn’t see the shamrock plant. I didn’t take it they’ll vocuh for me.” “What about you, Megan?” Max asked. “You’ve worked on a lot of science projects and you’ve always liked unusual plants. Did you take the shamrock?” “Of course not,” Megan said. “I already have two shamrock palnts at home. I didn’t take Miss Flannagan’s plant. I just stopped by to leave my book report on her desk. Maria was already in the room.” “And you, Maria?” Nina asked. “I didn’t take the plant,” Maria Whispered. “I Just Stopped by after chorus practice to get my notebook. We’re performing for tomorrow’s assembly. I didn’t take the plant.” Nina and Max stepped into the hall to discuss what they had heard. when they returned nina spoke. “We think we know who took the shamrock plant.” Whom does Max suspect?
